Basingstoke Community Radio

Basingstoke Community Radio (BCR) is a vibrant, volunteer-run community radio station based in Basingstoke, a town in Hampshire, situated in south-central England on the western edge of the North Downs.
BCR was founded in 2019 by David Chatten-Smith, a blind and passionate advocate for accessibility and community engagement. The station was set up with the help of a grant from The National Lottery and is a registered charity.
Since launching, BCR has grown to become a vital part of the local community providing a local-based radio station and community event support with their fully branded outside broadcast trailer, or their fully branded radio car, which is regularly seen in and around the shopping centres garden.
BCR aims to serve the diverse community of Basingstoke and its surrounding areas by:
• Providing a Platform for Local Voices: Empowering community members to share their stories, opinions, and talents through a variety of programs.
• Promoting Local Culture and Heritage: Highlighting the unique aspects of Basingstoke’s history and culture.
• Connecting the Community: Fostering a sense of belonging and togetherness among residents.
• Informing and Entertaining: Delivering high-quality programming that is both informative and enjoyable.
A Commitment to Accessibility and Inclusion
BCR is committed to making its services accessible to all members of the community, particularly those with visual impairments. The station provides a weekly, fully accessible talking news service for the print-disabled, ensuring that everyone can stay informed about local events and news.
State of the Art Facilities
The station is well located in an iconic building called The Clock Tower, directly in one of the town’s shopping centres and boasts 3 professional studios, including a dedicated training suite, where volunteers can develop their radio skills. The station’s commitment to training and development is evident in its workshops for young adults with learning difficulties, providing them with opportunities to gain valuable skills and experience.
A Volunteer-Powered Station
BCR’s success is driven by the dedication and passion of its 34 volunteers. These volunteers come from all walks of life and contribute to the station’s diverse programming, from music shows and talk programs to news and current affairs.
A Bright Future
Basingstoke Community Radio is a beacon of community spirit, providing a platform for local voices and fostering a sense of belonging. As the station continues to grow and evolve, it remains committed to its core values of community, accessibility, and inclusivity.
