Jeremy Hoare

Overview Being the third generation of a showbusiness family going back to 1905, it was inevitable that I would go into showbiz.

I worked for Lew Grade’s ATV through the ‘Golden Age’ of British television as a Cameraman then Central TV as a Lighting Director, a programme I lit won a BAFTA as Best Children’s Programme. But television changed into something I didn’t like so I left and became a freelance travel and portrait photographer.

More recently I have become an author and publisher, pulling together words and photos from my life and have had five books in print.. Television Finishing formal education at 15 never having sat an exam but with a prize for Best Swiss Photographs from a school trip, I had a gap weekend then became a Post Boy at ATV in Kingsway, a major company in the ITV Network. I worked unpaid at weekends as a Runner.

I was privileged to have worked for Lew Grade and ATV through the most inventive and adventurous days of British television as a Cameraman at Wood Green and Hackney studios before ATV Elstree. Outside Broadcasts and location work ranged from “Sunday Night at the London Palladium” to drama inserts and sport; Racing, Wrestling, Football and a British Formula One Grand Prix.

Whilst my initial ambition in television was to operate a camera, which I achieved at 19 years old, When the opportunity eventually occurred I moved from being a Television Cameraman at ATV Elstree to being a Lighting Director at Central Television in Nottingham, lighting programmes for network and local area and also US networks.

Following a 20 year gap, I returned occasionally to being a Cameraman, operating the main camera on a four camera recording of ballets in Kyoto, Japan where I have shot “Sleeping Beauty”, “Peter Pan”, “Cinderella”, “La Bayadere” and “Coppelia”.

Travel The majority of my work over the last 30 years has been as a travel and documentary photographer visiting about 60 countries.

I have been a judge on the Travel Photographer Of The Year competition since its inception and have had many exhibitions of my work in the UK and Japan.

My experiences as a travel photographer forms the basis of my radio series, ‘Travelling Man’.
